CD 1 – Viol Dreaming

As a title for our initial CD, Viol Dreaming works on a number of levels. Firstly, it acknowledges that music did not come into existence in Australia with the arrival of the first white settlers. Indigenous peoples have been “singing this country” for tens of thousands of years. The backbone of The Marais Project’s repertoire was written for the Royal Courts of The Old World but it sits lightly on our ancient continent. The notion of “Dreaming” also pays reference to the spiritual essence of humankind. Matthew Perry and Kevin Hunt’s evocative settings of two poems by Australian writer James McCauley tap deeply into this sentiment as only music can.
